amplifier is making high pitch whine that wont go away?
Ok, so my practice guitar amp, a Line6 Spider III 120 Watt Solid State, makes this really high-pitched whining noise when I turn it up past a certain volume. When I turn the volume down, the noise goes down, but then I can't be heard because the volume is so low. The noise also goes away when I rest my hands on my guitar's strings, but the next time I play a note, it's back. Is my amp maybe too close to the wall? Am I standing too close to the amp? This is really starting to piss me off.
I play a Gibson SG and am using a ProLink Monster Cable, if that helps.
Feedback comes from gain. Period. Either you are too close, or have too much gain. With the exception of mechanical or electrical failure, that is the only explanation.
You should pretty much never have your gain above 60%, and even then it's usually too high.
btw ... Monster cables suck. They are overpriced pieces of crap. You are far better off getting cables that can be repaired, as they will invariably be better for you in the long run. I have found Rapco cables (just as a f'r instance) to be of very decent quality, cost a lot less, and if by chance one of them fails me, I can pull out my soldering gun and fix it right quick. Ever Monster cable I've ever bought has failed me within a year and a half, while I have Rapco cables that I've gigged with for well over two years and running and haven't had a single failure.
The choice is yours - a cable that's overpriced, overhyped, and if it fails you can't be repaired but must be replaced (and if Guitar Center is closed...?), or a cable that has just as good sound quality, is decently priced, and can be repaired if something goes wrong?
