Why won't my window air conditioner cool my bedroom?
I have tried two different A/Cs to cool down my room (i've never had air conditioning before, so i don't know how they work), neither have seemed to work!
Our room is 10' x 13' with a spot in the wall under the window for us to put an air conditioner. Our ceiling is normal height (im pretty sure 8 ft).
The first, a Sunbeam 6,000 BTU. My boyfriend's parents said it was working at their house. We plugged it in here and it started blowing cool (not freezing) air, then a little colder, then cool again. We only had it plugged in for maybe 1 or 2 hours at a time, but it never cooled the room.
The second, we got today from someone who had it working at her house. It is a Goldstar 5,050 BTU. It was blowing COLD air. Then it went a little warmer again then cold, etc. We have had it plugged in for 2 hours now and our room is not cool yet.
Maybe we're not patient enough.
We have black curtains so our room is dark. And no windows or doors are open. Please help! thanks!
Window units have a tendency to get dirt and fuzz build up in the inside, (the part facing the fan), of the condenser. This can happen in as little as one summer in some areas. This reduces the efficiency of the unit by as much as 50% because, it cannot transfer the heat outside. If you are trying used units, this is a likely problem with both of them. Most units that are thrown away, only need to have this residue cleaned, and they work fine after that.
Looking at the back of the unit, (the part that is outside), you want to inspect the other side of the fins. You do this by shining a flash light in the side louvers, and illuminate the area through the fan blades. It should look just like the outside does. You will likely see some build up. If the area is blocked, you can carefully spray it with a garden hose from the outside in, using an up and down motion only, so as not to damage the fins on the outside. These fins being flattened will also lead to poor cooling, so if you have a lot of damage, carefuly straighten them with a blunt object. Recheck and respray as necessary until you see the fins on the inside.
Many units need to be disassembled to be properly cleaned, however the hose can open up enough of a flow to get most units working again.
