Apple Mac question !!?
hi i am a 18 year old student , my dad owns the latest macbook pro , with very good power and is ultra fast on the internet, i am looking to buy an old apple iBook or apple powerbook , even though they are old will they still be fast ? i am currently using a acer netbook which is very slow, will there be a BIG speed difference which i am hoping for ?? the iBooks or powerbooks probably will be second hand 5 years old , will they be fast like a macbook ?
An iBook or a PowerBook won't be quite as fast as your Dad's MacBook Pro for three reasons:
1) It's older hardware. While the G4 is a fast processor for it's class (and will usually out perform a non-Apple chip that's rates at the same clock speed) it's older than current. The G4 is a single-core processor; not a dual or quad-core like the current Intel chips. It's also got lower RAM totals than the current Macs. G4 iBook/PowerBooks are capped at 1.25GB RAM (depending on model) while the current MacBook Pros can take up to 8GB.
2) The AirPort WiFi card is only through the B band - not the G or N band that's the most current. B is still fast, but not as fast as G or N.
3) The OS version is limited to Tiger or (on some G4's) Leopard - not Snow Leopard like the Intel-based Macs.
That said, they can still be really usable computers for basic-ish needs. I bought a 14" iBook 1.25GHz G4 with 1.25GB RAM for my sister for $225 and a 15" PowerBook 1.0GHz G4 with 1.5GB RAM for $300 for my Mom and they run great - they were both faster at most tasks than my Dell Mini 9 with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom and 2GB RAM. They can still be great for browsing the web, checking email, using word processors, running iTunes, and watching (most) videos. And when you can get one for a couple hundred versus a MacBook Pro for over a grand, it's not a bad deal.
Personally, I never buy G4 Macs that have less than a 1GHz processor and I try to get them with maxed out RAM - you can still find RAM chips for the older Macs, but they aren't really cheap. With 1GHz and at least 1GB RAM you can run Leopard (OS X 10.5) well.
Just be careful - CraigsList here in Portland often has G4's for sale but often they are WAY too high prices ($500 for a 15" PowerBook 1.25GHz with 512MB RAM?? No thanks!) and you have to check them out well: some are well used and may have problems. If you can find a good deal they can be a great simple-use laptop
