Is this true???? If yes then how come density decrease with increase in speed and speed is more in gas than liquid (see methanol ethanol and hydrogen)
There are two major factors which affect the speed of sound, 1) the "stiffness" of a material, and 2) it's density.
You can calculate the speed of sound with.
speed = sqrt( bulk modulus / density )
Note: "sqrt(.....)" is the square root function. The "bulk modulus" is a measurement of how much pressure is needed to reduce the volume of a substance a given amount, in this case the pressure is from sound waves. the greater the bluk modulus, the harder it is to compress a substance.
Density is in the denominator in the fraction, so from a standpoint of basic math, decreasing the density of a substance will INCREASE the speed of sound.
Hydrogen gas has the lowest density of any gas, about 6% that of air. While it doesn't take much pressure to compress hydrogen gas, because of the extremely low density it still has a relatively high speed of sound.
Helium also has a very low density (compared to air.) This is why breathing helium gas from a balloon will make your voice sound high pitched, because the speed of sound in you trachea, mouth, and nose is increased.
Steel and aluminum have about the same stiffness level, steel having a slightly higher bulk modulus. However, since aluminum is only 40% as dense as steel it has a higher speed of sound.
