Difference between Watts music and Watts RMS?
I used to have two (so called) P.A. speakers that just recently I figure that where not what I thought they where, what I am trying to say is that I just recently notice that their technical specifications mention that they had 200 Watts Music!
I now bought two new speakers with 300 Watts RMS, so my question is can I convert the Watts Music in Watts RMS and vice versa?!
My doubt is because normally the professional P.A. Speakers and all professional gear are measured in RMS but the hi-fi gear like home stereo speakers an car speakers, normally are not, depending on the brands, expensive brands give this information or high end levels reveal!
I want to know about the conversion of Watts Music in Watts RMS! Is it possible?! What's the formula?!
Formula? There isn't one.
Audio power is the electrical power transferred from an audio amplifier to a loudspeaker, measured in watts. Since the instantaneous power of an AC waveform varies over time, AC power, which includes audio power, is typically measured as an average over time. For a purely resistive load, a simple equation can be used, based on the root mean square values of the voltage and current waveforms (i.e. Pavg = Vrms * Irms).
However, various confounding influences arise in the real world. The speakers are not a constant load and will vary depending on the loading on the cone. Various resonances occur. The output of an inexpensive car audio amplifier is limited by the voltage of the alternator. Even in high quality (mains powered) amplifiers, the supply voltage varies depending on the power output (from the amplifier). Because of this, the amplifier output can provide brief bursts of power that are higher than it could if the amplifier output were measured in a steady state. This works well for music as the waveforms are seldom a sinewave or steady signal.
Peak Music Power Output (PMPO) (sometimes misused in advertising as Peak momentary performance output) is a much more dubious measure, of interest more to advertising copy-writers than to consumers. The term PMPO has never been defined in any standard but it is often taken to be the sum of some sort of peak power for each amplifier in a system. Different manufacturers use different definitions, so that the ratio of PMPO to continuous power output varies widely; it is not possible to convert from one to the other.
