Henry Cooper: Floyd Patterson had faster hand and harder punches than Muhammad Ali? Any thoughts?
He was KO'd in 4 rounds by Patterson and had to stoppages to ALI (TKO) due to cuts over his eye...but in the first fight he floored Ali. Is he right about Ali vs. Patterson in hand speed and power punching?
You raise a good debate here. I would not go on Cooper's word because he disliked Ali personally and never had anything kind to say about him. However, it's worth a debate if one could be objective.
It's easy to view ALI as superior to Patterson in every way because, the two times they fought, before and after ALI's exile, Patterson was defenseless and "Offense-less". But that might not be true if you dissect their respective styles.
Patterson's power was not enough to trouble ALI and he never laid a serious glove on him in either fight so it's easy for one to think ALI was both Faster and More Powerful. But that might not be true.
First, it's the difference in FOOTWORK that raises the debate. Patterson's Footwork is almost non-existant against ALI's. That's the reason Patterson was rendered ineffective.
POWER
Patterson's power is slightly better than ALI's partly because of the way ALI chose to punch. He Rarely put full committment into his punches. ALI had the ability to move "Just inches" out of harms way AND see every punch coming. This is unheard of among heavyweights but it also raises the question of what might have happened had ALI never gone into exile.
Would he have eventually matured into a puncher?
Near as we can tell, I'd say that, for those reasons, Patterson has a slight edge. They're about equal in power but Patterson committed more to his punches than ALI ever did.
SPEED
Again, the speed is very close between these two. However, again, there is a BIG difference in the WAY each man threw his punches. Here is the Biggest difference between the two.
Patterson's jab is ineffective against a fighter like ALI or any fighter who can punch well from the outside. He's also ineffective against any POWER hitter. If Patterson can get inside, he can launch faster punches. On the outside, he's a sitting duck.
ALI is the near opposite, where he punches better from outside, something most fighters don't do well, esp. heavyweights. ALI was never an "Inside" fighter. He committs more fundamental flaws than nearly any other boxer. Because of his speed and balance, something most heavyweights lack, he can get away with it.
Larry Holmes is as close as you get to ALI's footwork and even HE looks clumbsy by comparison. Chris Byrd had decent Footwork but, again, not even close. There were a FEW others but NONE had ALI's balance. THAT made the biggest difference in his Footwork and the Illusion his already fast hands hands created.
What I mean by Illusion is not any doubt in ALI's ability to launch punches very quickly. It implies to the belief that NO ONE comes close to his speed.
Patterson is close. The difference is that he has never been a good outside fighter and ALI has never been an inside fighter. Because he lost so miserably to ALI, people find it hard to imagine Patterson being compared in any way.
IT's hard for me to take anything from Cooper seriously where ALI is considered. I can't forget the ridiculous list of fighters he claimed would beat ALI. However, in this particular debate, he was not far off the mark.
