How can I sound less classical and more jazzy on alto sax?
I play the alto sax and it sounds too classical. I don't know how to sound like how an alto sax should sound. What surprises me is I made it in to our middle school jazz band with this sound! I have a great classical tone but it needs to be more jazzy like a sax should be. What do I do??? I'm using the Yamaha 4c with Vandoren v16 reeds and the standard lig that comes with the Yamaha yas 23 student horn i have. Would a Meyer 5m mouthpiece help? I realize practicing helps a lot but how or what should I practice? Please help!!!
This guy has basically been my role model to how I want to sound (Like this will ever happen :/)
Stop thinking TECHNICAL and that you are PLAYING the sax.. and just FEEL THE MUSIC PASS THROUGH YOU as you become a PART of the instrument Rather than a mere player of the instrument.
Pick a piece you know and play it as usual.. THEN.. play it again and imagine you feel the music leaving the sax into one hand.. passing through your shoulders and body and retuning to the sax through the other hand.. VISUALIZE THIS.. and then see if that helps you.
