why don't they make them like they used to?
Appliances. Every new appliance I've bought in the past 10 years or so, is relatively junk compared to the appliances my parents used, and I buy "nicer" brands! There are glaring design flaws, cheap materials, and parts that don't work smoothly or that fall off. The lifespan of a brand new toaster is only about 4 years with normal use in my experience. The only advantage to new appliances is that they save energy. The one single really nice solid appliance that I own, is a Kitchenaid (US made) stand mixer. It's not hard to get good quality things that don't have moving parts; it's just the darned appliances that suck.
Do you have a similar experience, or have you found appliances that are as high quality design and construction as older ones?
Why do *you* think they don't make them like they used to?
So you'll buy another one sooner. This is a simple economics issue. If you can build it cheaper you can sell it cheaper, and since you're competing with other companies, you have to be price competitive. And if it's made cheaper and doesn't last as long you'll buy another one sooner.
