Is it a good idea to put raw meat in your unbleached kitchen sink?
My husband insists on thawing meat in the kitchen sink. I think its unsanitary. What do you think.
Sort of. When you are handling food, always use a clean sink, first!
What I do is get a glass or metal bowl, something that is easy to clean and about double the size of the meat. Then put the frozen meat in a zipper bag esp if there is no packaging or if you think the package could leak. Squeeze out the extra air and seal it tight! Then put that under the tap and trickle cold water into it. Using the bowl is nothing more than a bit of water savings...it keeps water around the meat to thaw it without having to fill up the whole sink.
Using the sink is one HELL of a lot more sanitary than dragging the whole mess to another area of the kitchen, esp the fridge where things are so much more difficult to clean up. At the sink, the water is right there, and you can just swish all the bacteria down the drain! It is the easiest possible place in the whole kitchen to get cleaned up from something like this.
And as for the person who says you can't use the sink...but you can trickle water in a bowl...where is this supposed to occur if not the sink? AND where does the germy water spill to if not the sink? I don't get that one at all.
The only other really safe method is to put the meat in a lidded container, and then place it in the fridge until it is thawed.
That zipper bag saves me a whole lot of heartache. Technically you could even thaw in a dirty sink with a zipper bag, and keep the crud from the sink off your food. But...why? Just clean your sink!
