How good is the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 apo HSM lens. Is it really lighter and faster focus then the non HSM lens?
I used a earlier model sigma 70-200 f2.8 apo, but found it to be very heavy and slow focusing. Wondering is the HSM lens, with same focal lengh, is any lighter and faster focusing?? Is it actually better?
The old version I HSM lens weighed 48.7 ounces; the new lens (HSM version II) weighs 48.3 ounces.
So the new lens is slightly lighter than even the version I HSM lens.
In terms of focusing, the new lens will definitely be faster. The old lens (which I believe was a 70-210 f/2.8) was typically screw driven on Nikon cameras, which is a slower, more cumbersome system. On Canon cameras, the lens had a motor, but not an HSM motor.
On top of that, optical formulations have changed since the old 70-210 f/2.8 Sigma, so that the lens should be sharper and have better contrast. Personally though, I find many Sigmas to have a warm cast which you may not like.
But yes, it'll be much better than the old lens you used--if your camera can support the HSM feature.
BTW, the new Sigma can focus as close as 39.4" vs. 6 feet for the older 70-210 f/2.8 AF Sigma.
