Colonoscopy prep - what to expect?
I'm getting a colonoscopy tomorrow morning. I've reviewed everything about the procedure and know the facts about what will happen. What I'm looking for is someone to relate any experiences with this to me and let me know what all this awful stuff is gonna feel like.
I was allowed to have a last, light meal today at noon. Then at 1pm I took (as instructed by my doctor) 4 Dulcolax tablets. At 3pm, I have to have a Picolax prep (orally) and another Picolax drink at 6pm.
I know I'll likely have a lot of diarrhea, but how severe is this going to be? Will it be really painful? I'm dreading this and not looking forward to it at ALL.
I'm allowed to have fluids, I've got some broth, gatorade, and lots of water handy. I can also have tea or coffee without milk up until midnight tonight. After that nothing. Can I have chewing gum?
After the procedure, will I be sore? I'll be getting the sedative to make it tolerable.
Just had one...didn't want to, but it IS important. Anyway, Your bowel should be completely cleaned out, i.e. the diarrahea should get to where it has no solid matter in it. I didn't have any cramping or pain with the prep. I'd skip the chewing gum, but I have to admit, I did cheat with a few ice chips to wet my mouth. I was so dry they just soaked in and there was nothing to swallow. As far as the procedure, they have it down to a fine art these days. You'll be talking to somebody and the next minute it will be all over and you will be in recovery. You may have some mild cramping and gas afterwards which is normal because they put air in the bowel to "blow it up" so to speak so they can see all of it. Don't be embarassed...just push it right on out. I felt fine afterwards and stopped for a hamburger on the way home. I was starved!!!
