A satellite is about 1800 km from the center of the earth. Find its average orbital speed about the Earth.?
I don't understand how to solve this. Also, the radius of the earth is 6380 km. How can a satellite be lower than the radius of the earth? This is the second time I've gotten this question in class, so it doesn't seem to be a mistake. Please someone help me out.
You should seek clarification from your professor.
There are two ways to go about the problem. The first is to treat the earth as a point that has no radius. The second is to have the earth as a planet and you would add the radius of the earth and the altitude ( 6380km plus 1800 km). The latter treats the 1800km as how far above the surface the satellite is located.
After you know what the radius should be just plug it into the satellite mass of the earth (use the values given in by the problem/book/teacher) and the value of G, the gravitational constant.
I found that in Physics, it really helps see how equations are derived and the relationships between variables (like how the radius changes the velocity of the satellite)
