Whats the best and easiest thing to use for scraping off old cylinder head gaskets on the block?
I am rebuilding the top end on my 350 & i been using a razor blade scraping off the old bits of head gasket taking my time making sure to to put any scratches in the surface but its taking FOREVER, so is there any other things to speed the process up safely where I don't damage the block so I can get a nice super smooth surface? also another question if someone might know, after I have done all the scraping and whatnot and get prepped and put the cylinder heads on, being that its like 20 degrees outside where I am working on it (yea i know but I'm not bothered by it lol), will the temperature have any effect on the on the torque when I torque the heads down? or well can it have any kind of negative effect to that?
I do the same thing as JaneM.
I have a 3" putty knife that I used a grinder to get a thinner, sharp edge on, then used my wet stone to sharpen it like you would a knife.
Yuse that to get all the bigger stuff off, then a scotch brite disk on a die grinder to smooth it up even more.
Then use paint thinner on a shop towel to wash off the block decks to make sure theres no oil or grease left on.
Also use compressed air to blow in each cyl. bore to make sure no little bits of gaskets make it into the bores.
No as long as your heads, block and bolts are close to the same temp torque specs will not change.
65 ft lbs with moly lube on bolt threads and under bolt heads
70 ft lbs with engine oil on threads and under bolt heads
Torque in 3 steps, 15, 35, 65 (or 70)
