Anyone have a hypersensitive kid?
Since birth my child has been sensitive to all kinds of loud noises. He is three and still hates the blender and Vacuum cleaner. He also can't be around large groups of kids or people without getting overwhelmed. (to much stimulation) He is easily frustrated and highly emotional about certain things. I am wondering if anyone knows what I mean and can offer me advice on social situations(like preschool) He is an only child and I am a stay at home mom who gets him to the park or beach almost everyday. But lately he is even asking to Stay Home all the time. If he feels overwhelmed or nervous he will just leave or walk away. This worries me about preschool and any kind of day care becasue I think he will just wander out the door or away from people, and no one will notice.
I used to care for a child with similar behaviors. He was a fairly calm and easy-going child at his house, but he was quickly overwhelmed and would cry and become upset easily at day care or when there were loud noises. He was eventually diagnosed with Sensory Integration Dysfunction. He received occupational therapy, and it made a world of difference for him. He was performing at the top of his class the last time I saw him (he's now 12).
I certainly am in no position to diagnose your son, but you may want to review some information on this disorder. Here are a few links:

There could also be some medical areas to have assessed. Here's a couple of links to articles about causes of noise sensitivity and links to Magnesium deficiency:

You should probably discuss your son's behavior and your concerns with his pediatrician. He or she may be able to do some assessments and make a referral to a qualified occupational therapist or neurologist for evaluation.
Things that you might try (and possibly already have tried) include: Trying to keep your home calm and soothing for your son when possible, easing him into situations that tend to be overwhelming for him, exposing him to mild levels of stimulation, rewarding him for facing difficult experiences, and allowing him to have time to relax and debrief between experiences. You definitely want to keep him engaging with other kids, but you might want to set the stage a bit when possible (invite only one fairly calm child over to play, go to the park at less busy times). You might also work on helping him find a few tricks to help calm himself when he feels overwhelmed, rather than running off.
Best wishes on helping your son.
