Could ink from a tattoo left on an arm be analyzed to determine the ink used thus leading to the parlor?
Theres a forensic case i'm working on where theres an arm and no particular leads to who the arm belonged to. Only thing that separates out this arm is the tattoos that has been inked on the arm. Based on the ink used, can the ink go through chromatography thus giving the ink composition and brand leading to the makers of the ink and then finally to the distributors to determine which parlor uses this ink in particular? Also, the arm was washed ashore on a beach.. could studies show how long it has been in the water by the condition of the arm and if so, could a meteorologist using the speed of tides and the weight of the arm determine the approximate location of where the arm was thrown in the ocean? Thanks in advance.
I think ink analysis might be useful, but chromatography is not the method I suggest. I think spectrompotometry, IR, vis, and/or UV, would be most useful. ESCA or EDAX could be useful. THis depends on whether the pigments are organic or inorganic; I don't know which is likely.
However, before digging into that, call up a few tattoo places [or a trade association, if one exists] and see how many different brands of ink there are, and how many manufacturers. IF it turns out that there is only one ink maker, no matter how precisely you identify the ink it won't help [unless there were some extremely rare formulation they made in the tattoo].
The ink manufacturer ought to be able to tell you what tests would be easiest. They might even be able to run them for you. Failing that a paint manufacturer could be helpful.
I am sure some oceanographer could help with the drifting question. I am sure the navy has pathologists versed in the effects of water on body parts.
